UMBRO Colleges Cup First Round Results

Division One side Castlebar GMIT caused the major upset of the First Round of the Umbro Cup by knocking out Premier Division side Galway GMIT 4-3. This result sees Castlebar secure local bragging rights in the West. In the East, DIT advance to the next round where they will face GMIT after an impressive 3-1 win against NCI in Grangegorman.

Last year's beaten finalists Letterkenny IT made a it a day to forget for Cavan Institute by demolishing them 15-0 in Letterkenny. Newcomers Belfast Metropolitan won 4-3 away against South West College Enniskillen.

Colaiste Stiofain Naofa cruised past Division One side Dublin Business School 7-1 at the AUL. It was a welcome result for Liam Murphy's side who have so far failed to pick up any points in Premier Division South. TI / St Pats beat UL in League opener

Tipperary Institute / St Pats 3 -1 University of Limerick “C”
Robin Murray 55 John Dunne 5
David Brophy 70
Phil O’Brien 82

Tipperary Institute / St Pats got their season off to a good start yesterday with a win against University of Limerick. The UL team, who consist of players from their Crowley Cup panel, are new entrants to the league with their first team and ‘freshers’ team having competing in the higher divisions last season.

TI, who topped the Second south division last year, went behind very early, when UL sprung the offside trap to leave their centre forward Dunne one on one with Dargan in the TI goal, where he made no mistake. The Tipperary students gradually played their way back into the game and overall had the better of the half. While Hensey and Brophy had chances for Tipperary Institute the half finished at 1-0. Upon the restart TI continued to apply pressure but when the equaliser came after 10 minutes, it owed much to fortune as a rushed clearance rebounded off the advancing Murray past the stranded Limerick keeper.

TI continued their dominance, but Limerick came very close to once again taking the lead when, following a corner which wasn’t clear, a deflected shot was touched around the post by an excellent reaction save from Dargan. At this point the next goal was always going to have a big bearing on the outcome of the game. It came when man of the match Martin Fitzgerald won possession on the right and quickly curled in a low cross which was headed home beautifully just in front of the keeper by the in rushing Brophy.

The game was sealed with about 10 minutes to go when Phil O’Brien received a great switch on the left side of the box, controlled and slotted past the keeper from a tight angle. The Tipperary students go to Cork to take on Northside Campus of Further Education next week. More information on www.thirdlevelfootball.ie.

Dundalk IT win the Bob Eustace cup

Dundalk IT 3-0 Tipperary Institute
Murphy 55
Johnston 65
O’Donnell 88

Dundalk IT finished on top in the Bob Eustace Cup Final played at Salthill Devon’s grounds in Drom, Galway on Wednesday last. The game was played in poor conditions with a very strong wind blowing from end to end, making it the proverbial game of two halves.

Dundalk won the toss and elected to play against the wind in the first period and while Tipperary Institute applied pressure and Hensey looked dangerous up front, they were unable to create many clear chances against a resolute defence. In fact the best chance of the half felt to Dundalk when O’Donnell volleyed against the underside of the crossbar.

With the sides level at the break, the teams switched around and the pressure immediately came on the Tipperary side. The breakthrough for Dundalk came following a corner from the left side. The clearing header was met on the half volley by Murphy on the edge of the area and driven low to the corner of the net through a forest of bodies with the keeper unsighted.

Tipperary Institute went in search of an equaliser and came close when Rencontre got in behind the defence, but unfortunately his shot from a tight angle went over the bar. Shortly after Tipperary received a further set-back when they conceded a second. A free kick from out on the Dundalk right wing, was met at the back post by their centre back, Barthe, and headed back into the path of Johnston to score with the simplest of headers from four yards out.

While TI brought on some fresh legs and continued to plug away to reduce the deficit, Dundalk held strong and used the wind to ensure there were no clear chances. In the end it was Dundalk who scored next to end the game as a contest on 88 minutes. A direct free kick from about forty yards with a strong wind behind, was powerfully struck by Flynn, and while Dargan in the Tipperary goal made an excellent save, the ball rebounded to O’Donnell to turn it home and wrap up the game.

At the presentation directly after Bob Eustace, the president of the Colleges Football Association of Ireland, commended both teams on an entertaining game played in extremely difficult conditions.

UMBRO Colleges Cup Final Match Report

By John Hudson, in Drom, Galway.

IT Sligo 3 Letterkenny IT 2

Second half substitute Stephen Coen with a goal on 75 minutes bridged a 32 year gap as IT Sligo held on against Letterkenny IT to claim the Colleges FAI Umbro Cup for the first time since 1977 at Salthill Devon.

Sligo were twice ahead in a pulsating decider first from a Niall Costello header just before the break and then Sean Kelly's volley on 51 minutes.Only for the Donegal side to respond brilliantly drawing level with two second half goals after Gareth Harkin had earlier failed to hit an equaliser from the penalty spot on 44 minutes.

Letterkenny midfielder Paul Doohan was more accurate with his spot kick two minutes into the second half when Harkin was pulled down in the box and then Mark Forker netted a second equaliser on 67 minutes.

But Sligo bounced back for Coen to strike the winner with a low drive past Paddy Harkin following a neat move by Sean Kelly and Thibaul Galland found him free on the right.

Tipperary Institute win thru to Bob Eustace Cup Final

Tipperary Institute 1 – 0 Senior College Dun Laoghaire
Browne 15

Tipperary Institute won through to their first Bob Eustace Cup Final defeating the current holders, Senior College Dun Laoghaire, 1-0 in a very competitive fixture in Thurles today. SCD came to this Semi Final having beaten Cavan Institute and Mater Dei in previous rounds, while Tipperary Institute had overcome Griffith College Dublin and St Patricks College Carlow on their journey through the competition.

The game started at a hectic pace, with both sides fully committed, but with few clear cut chances. After 15 minutes, TI took the lead when a Robert Browne free kick from out on the left wing was deflected home by an unfortunate Dun Laoghaire defender. Despite both keepers being called upon regularly throughout the 90 minutes, this proved to be the only difference at the end of a hugely enthralling semi final.

For Tipperary, Hensey and Rencontre both caused trouble for the Dun Laoghaire back line while O’Brien and Murray worked tirelessly in midfield. At the back Guiry and Keegan gave very solid performances in front of Dargan who looked composed at all times.

The Tipperary team, comprising of students from St Patricks College, Thurles and both Tipperary Institute’s campuses, now advance to play the winners of Dundalk IT or Drogheda Institute of FE in the final. This game will be one of the four finals played over two days at the CFAI National Cup Finals in Galway. The match is scheduled for the 11th of March @3pm in the Salthill Devon Complex at Drom.

CFAI National Squad Trials held in Athlone

The trials for the national squad were held in Athlone last Friday the Jan 30th. Over 70 players representing 19 College members took part.

Again this year the trials were based loosely around the provincial system with two games. Players from Munster and Ulster took part in the first game with Connacht and Leinster players playing in the second game, which needed to be extended due to the number of players who turned up to trial.

Both games were watched closely by the new management team Danny Crowley (Colaiste Ide) Team Manager, Paddy Gleeson (CSN) Assistant Manager and Jim Conroy (Colaiste Ide) Assistant Coach .

The panel will be named shortly and they will most likely play a number of friendly matches in preparation for the games against the Defence Forces and the Irish Universities later in the year.
