ITT Dublin Futsal

IT Tallaght Dublin were hit by futsal fever this week when they hosted a successful one-day tournament at the National Basketball Arena.

After two exciting groups produced plenty of thrills, the final was a real cracker as Trev's Army ran out 6-5 winners over Galacticos.

Galacticos won Group A with three straight victories, conceding just one goal en route to the final. Their side was made up of Adam Behan (GK), Michael Isichei, Colm Corcoran, Robert McDonagh, John Mullane, Neil Mulvey, Ian Ellis and Craig Donoghue.

Trev's Army came out of a tense Group B, which featured three teams. All three sides won one game but Trev's Army clinched top spot on goal difference after Ian Cronin secured a 1-0 win for Dynamo Chicken Kiev with ten seconds left of their clash with All-Stars, who had been denied by a string of saves from impressive goalkeeper Ian Donnelly.

The final saw Isichei put Galacticos 1-0 up but a double from Stevie Nicholl put Trev's Army in control. Ellis responded and Isichei added another to restore Galacticos lead but a Nicholl free-kick whizzed home just before the break to make it 3-3.

Trev's Army started the second half on fire and a double from Sean Ward and another Nicholl finish made it 6-3 in their favour. Remarkably Isichei and Colm Corcoran responded for Galacticos but they just couldn't carve out an equaliser.

The winning squad was: Stephen Larkin (GK), Trevor Boyle, Declan Hoare, Ciaran O'Carroll, Sean Ward, John Ward, Stevie Nicholl, James Fox, David Feighery.

CFAI website updated

As you can see, we've updated the CFAI website. We've tried to concentrate on enabling members and the committee to submit content more easily (via email) and presenting it on the front page. Rather than build components into our site, we've tried to use external component websites where possible:
- Flickr is being used to host our photo archives.
- Blogger is being used to host our News Archives
- We've introduced a new Forum where members can comment on anything football related (within reason).
- We're connecting to http://www.thirdlevelfootball.ie/ for the league
- We're connecting to League Republic for the Cup fixtures and results.

Comments and feedback welcome in the forum.

Regards
Mike

Wilmington Hammerheads 1 - 5 CFAI

Match Report: Niall Kelleher

The Irish students finished their tour of North Carolina with an emphatic victory against the local side the Wilmington Hammerheads. The College’s team started with a burst showing promise after their previous encounters over the past week and following on from their performance against UNCAW.

The Irish students came close to having the perfect start with a C Bargarry free was headed of the line. S Roache then came close to with a free kick but went over the crossbar only just. C Fahy seemed to everywhere, causing havoc on the pith this time being partnered by the ever dangerous J Tierney.

The Irish lads got the break through when C Fahy latched onto a wayward back pass to leave himself one on one with the Hammerheads keeper. He then put himself in contention for Goal of the tour when he lobbed the keeper to set the Irish team on their way. C Fahy then found himself with the ball the ball again after another opportunist intercept and this time rounded the Wilmington keeper to square the ball for his stricking partner J Tierney who slotted home.

The American side then had a couple of attack which demanded the Irish keeper to be on his toe’s. The half ended with an Irish team playing open expansive football to leave their Coach Liam Murphy optimistic going into the second half.

The Irish students Kept the pressure on in the second half with C Fahy nearly slotting home after beating two defenders but the Wilmington Keeper did well to save. Fahy was again on the mark when he slotted home from a C Green cross to leave the Irish students three up. The Hammerheads then clawed back one to leave the spectators with an enjoyable half hour of football.

The Irish Students bounced back to with a J Molloy strick which beat the Wilmington keeper. The tie then was finished with a crossed ball for the right and and was slotted home to leave the Irish lads well in control to coast to the end. The game was a very enjoyable encounter and proved to be a great end to th CFAI’s tour of North Carolina. The next fixture will be against the Universities representative team on 16th of April.

UNC Willmington 1 - 3 CFAI

Match Report: Niall Kelleher

The game was played in UNCAW’s ground under lights and with conditions perfect for the encounter. The Irish colleges started well and esured that the game was going to be played at a fast pace. The Irish boys came close in the first five minutes with a volley from J Tierney. The Irish lads got off the mark after ten minutes when a cross from P Doohan was headed into the path of the advancing C Fahy who shot past the Wilmington keeper.

A shot from S Roache was tipped over the cross bar by the Wilmington keeper There was further saves by the Wilmington keeper from J Tierney and S Roache who was doing his best to keep his side in the game but the Irish students ended the first half with the advantage going into the second half.

The Irish students started the second half with the same resolve as the first half.

Colin Fahy was making runs which was putting the opposition’s defence under pressure to keep the Irish students from adding to their tally. The Irish eventually got added to their tally when C Green found C Fahy who laid the ball on to A o Sullivan who bravely took on the Wilmington and shot to curl the ball around the keeper. Wilmington then seemed to up their pace with chances being saved by G Philpot.

The Irish boys put the tie beyond the grasp of their American counterparts when a C Green again found the ever present C Fahy, who drove the ball home despite the best efforts of the Wilmington keeper. The Wilmington side then uped the pace of their game and missed some chances due to the efforts of the Irish keeper, but hit the mark to finish when their center forward slotted past the Irish keeper. The game was played at a fast pace with the Irish boys working hard to give an overall good team performance.

Campbell University 2 - 3 CFAI

Match Report: Niall Kelleher

The game was played under lights at the Fighting Camels home groud The game started at a furious pace with The Irish keeper saving after 5 min. Both sides traded playes with the Irish students hitting the mark from a free kick from D mcEvoy which was headed home by B

McCarthy who beat the Campbells Keeper to the ball. Campbell University and the Colleges had close chances saved by both keepers with T Kiely and J Tierney coming the closest. Campbell got their reward when a cross from the left side of the field skidded past the Irish defence to be guided home by the Campbell’s center forward.

On the thirty fifth minute the Irish students had the ball saved off the line when C Green crossed to the head of C Fahy. The Irish students got their reward for pushing hard when B McCrathy stepped up to head home his second from a T Kiely corner which left the Irish students with the advantage going into the second half.

The second half started with Campbell University pushing forward and were rewarded when D McEvoy unluckily guided the ball into his own net. C Fahy then had a chance to put the Irish Students ahead but the Keeper saved to keep Campbell with sight of the Irish Students.

The American students then started to push forward trying to get the winner. The Irish team then were counter attacking which gave the spectators a thrilling half hour of football. The Irish students had chances from C Fahy saved by the keeper who kept his team in contention. A shot from R O Hanlon was again saved by the Americans Keeper.

J McGuinness had a busy period in the Irish Goal during this period of the game. The Irish students then scored with a wonder goal from J Tierney who picked up a slack pass in his own half. Tierney then dribbled from his own half to the Americans sides box and shot home from the right into the bottom left of the American goal.

The American side then tied to pull back but time was on the Irish College’s side and held on to win the encounter. The spectators were entertained by both sides who gave two determined performances of which the Irish Students came out on top due to a superb goal by J Tierney.

University of North Carolina 3 - 2 CFAI

Match Report: Niall Kelleher

The Irish colleges got off to a great start with a pass from T Kiely to R O Hanlon who drove the ball into the UNCA’s goal mouth where it was cleared off the line by the UNCA’s left back Loyd.

The University students attacked with UNCA’S Loyd just running out of space on the end line and hitting the Irish students left post. Both side traded plays for the next few minutes until a through ball from John Tierney caught the opposing defence off guard to leave T Kiely through but the UNCA’s defence recovered well to stop the Irish student from hitting the mark.

T Kiely then picked up a clearance from UNCA’s keeper and shot home from thirty Yards to put the Irish students into the lead. The second came from a run from a Ciarain Green who passed the ball to a waiting John Tiernry who drove the ball home leaving the UNCA’s keeper with little or no chance of stopping the shot.

The Irish students enjoyed a period of dominance but UNCA worked, hard with Urso for UNCA’s having a shot saved by J McGuinness. UNCA then upped the pace and finished the stronger with some close calls but Brown for UNCA shot home to leave the Irish student with a one goal advantage going into the second half.

UNCA came out from the start with renewed vigour and both sides traded plays with UNCA pushing hard to equalise. They got the break through when Ababio was fowled in the box to give the American students a penalty which was saved by Garry Phillpot but had to be retaken as the Irish Student followed in too early. The penalty was then dispatched by Callaghan to even up the tie.

UNCA seemed to get the upper hand at this stage Urso coming close on a couple of occasions. UNCA’s winner came from a curled cross, which left the Irish keeper stranded and went directly into the Irish net. The Irish student then tried to rally and came close but did not get the equaliser. The American student came out Victors of a very enjoyable and hard fought contest.
