Match Report: Niall Kelleher

The game was played in UNCAW’s ground under lights and with conditions perfect for the encounter. The Irish colleges started well and esured that the game was going to be played at a fast pace. The Irish boys came close in the first five minutes with a volley from J Tierney. The Irish lads got off the mark after ten minutes when a cross from P Doohan was headed into the path of the advancing C Fahy who shot past the Wilmington keeper.

A shot from S Roache was tipped over the cross bar by the Wilmington keeper There was further saves by the Wilmington keeper from J Tierney and S Roache who was doing his best to keep his side in the game but the Irish students ended the first half with the advantage going into the second half.

The Irish students started the second half with the same resolve as the first half.

Colin Fahy was making runs which was putting the opposition’s defence under pressure to keep the Irish students from adding to their tally. The Irish eventually got added to their tally when C Green found C Fahy who laid the ball on to A o Sullivan who bravely took on the Wilmington and shot to curl the ball around the keeper. Wilmington then seemed to up their pace with chances being saved by G Philpot.

The Irish boys put the tie beyond the grasp of their American counterparts when a C Green again found the ever present C Fahy, who drove the ball home despite the best efforts of the Wilmington keeper. The Wilmington side then uped the pace of their game and missed some chances due to the efforts of the Irish keeper, but hit the mark to finish when their center forward slotted past the Irish keeper. The game was played at a fast pace with the Irish boys working hard to give an overall good team performance.
